Colours of Black and White

An idea has been pounding my mind for the last couple of weeks now, I have the title, I have the plot, but I need something else to close the circle and move on with the actual writing.  It’s a little after midnight, and I’m driving home after the Steven Wilson concert in Lisbon, the debut of his 2018 tour.

And it’s the sounds and visuals, the ambiance of the Porcupine Tree leading man’s concert, its spark and creativity, which propels mine. Now, a few minutes under 1 in the morning, I’m writting about a life that is subject to the choice of others, or shall I say “other”, as it is only one person who continuously and repeatedly makes the decisions in their (latent, yet inexistent) live… love life.

Bottom line of the words is: “Colour your life according to the spectrum of your emotions and motivations, and don’t accept others’ impositions, definitions, constrictions… at all times, at all costs“.

So, here goes my train of thought…

We once exchanged glances,
Before we sat together, eye to eye,
We made circumstantial conversation,
(Talked) about common problems, of lives going by.

And then we felt the heat, even if you said it was cold.
And then you played naive, unlike the image you sold.
You called it a fight,
And well into the night,
Your thoughts revealed your colours
Of black and white.

In your eyes, I can see how
Feelings and frustrations now boil
Words you utter feel like screams now
Through your skin, I can feel the turmoil

And as I approach your body from behind,
As I plan to bring colours to the night ahead,
You will decide it to be white or black,
(And) not my choice of intense, passionate red.

And then we felt the heat, even when you said it was cold.
And then you played naive, unlike the image you sold.
You called it a fight,
And well into the night,
Your thoughts revealed your colours
Of black and white.

In this hypothetical imprisonment,
I feel I was left for dead.
And I could have been…
For all you care.

The stillness of private moments.
One of two drives the movements, one of two drives the quietness.
